David asks: Hey Ian, here’s my December 2010 question:
What would you suggest as a local-SEO “checklist”?
Thanks!
David
Hi David,
Wow. That’s a big one
For now, here’s a limited version:
- Make sure you get submitted to all the major local directories. The easiest way to do this is to start with a site like GetListed.org, and then follow up by using a pay service like UBL.org. They cost a little bit, but they’ll submit you all over the place and get you covered.
- Submit a complete Bing and Google Local/Places/Whatever they call it this week listing. Include photos, videos, etc.
- Request reviews from customers. Ask them to do their reviews on one of the sites that Google and Bing scrape for data, or right on Google or Bing’s local sites.
- Put your address and phone number on every page of your site, in real text, not a graphic.
- Use the current, trendy geolocation and hcard tags.
- Then, depending on how important local SEO is for you, optimize for your region’s phrases. If you’re in Seattle, include ‘Seattle’ in your title tag and in your body copy.
Hope this helps,
Ian
