One way to build lots of links quickly is to create a large number of profiles on social media sites. Almost all of these sites allow you to link to your site in your profile.
These sites range from the well-known web giants like Facebook and Twitter to obscure forums and Pligg sites. However, many larger sites apply the ‘nofollow’ tag to your outbound links. (This is a response to repeated abuse by spammers and bad SEOs.) Small, unknown sites often follow their profile links, making them more effective for SEO.
But don’t despair at the lack of followed links on your favorite sites – nofollow’ed links are still valuable to your SEO effort. SEOs believe nofollow links still pass some link equity, and nofollow links are an important part of a natural link profile.
Remember to participate on the site – particularly if the link is dofollow’ed. This will help your profile get internal links from the rest of the site, increasing the link equity of the links to your site – it is, after all, social media.

- Squidoo - Squidoo is author Seth Godin’s user-generated content site. It gives do-follow links, and you can even earn a share of the ad revenue from your writing on the site. A must-do.
- WordPress - The hosted version of the top open-source blog software. WordPress has a large amount of domain authority, and creating a page linking to your site is fast and easy. Another great one to hit for link building.
- Twitter - While the link to your site from your profile is nofollow’ed, Twitter is one of the most popular social media sites and a powerful real-time search engine. Bing and Google also index the Twitter firehouse, and there’s evidence that tweeting a link to your pages leads to increased indexation.
- Quora - A Silicon Valley-heavy Q&A site – like if Yahoo answers had a degree from Stanford and stock options. Generally a great site, and good for high trust nofollow’ed links.
- Value Investing News – This is an example of a small, niche social media site that can be great for followed backlinks. In addition to the follow’ed link from your profile, you can promote your content on the site itself. If you have a financial site, this would be a great link building and promotion opportunity.
